What is a mechanical aptitude test?

A mechanical aptitude test measures how well you understand basic mechanical principles: gears, pulleys, levers, springs, hydraulics, simple electrical circuits, and force and motion. Most of them show you a picture of an everyday situation, ask a short multiple-choice question about it, and give you very little time to answer. A machinist wants a driven gear to spin exactly twice as fast as the gear driving it. Compared with the driver, the driven gear must have:

A. Half as many teeth    B. Twice as many teeth    C. The same number of teeth

Answer: A. Gear speed is inversely proportional to tooth count: the fewer teeth a gear has, the more turns it must make to pass the same number of teeth through the mesh. To double the speed, the driven gear needs half the teeth of the driver. Doubling the teeth would instead cut the speed in half.

A rigger must lift a 240-lb beam but can comfortably pull with no more than 65 lb of force. Ignoring friction, which is the simplest block and tackle that will do the job?

Answer: C. Divide the load by each mechanical advantage: 240 divided by 2 is 120 lb and 240 divided by 3 is 80 lb — both more than the rigger’s 65-lb limit. With 4 supporting segments the pull drops to 240 divided by 4, or 60 lb, which is within the limit. The rigger accepts pulling 4 feet of rope per foot of lift in exchange.

A loaded wheelbarrow is lifted by its handles and pivots on its front wheel. Which class of lever is the wheelbarrow?

A. Class 1    B. Class 2    C. Class 3

Answer: B. The wheel acts as the fulcrum at one end, the lifting effort is applied at the handles at the other end, and the load sits in the tray between them. When the load lies between the fulcrum and the effort, the lever is class 2, which is why a modest lift at the handles can support a much heavier load.
