Utility-specific screens
Beyond the named tests, individual employers run their own screens. PacifiCorp routes electrical-apprentice applicants to the NJATC/Electrical Training Alliance test. How the Electrical Aptitude Test Is Scored

Your raw number of correct answers is converted to a stanine — a single whole number from 1 to 9 (the word is short for “standard nine”). A stanine of 5 sits in the middle of the range; higher is better. The stanine is what your local sees, and it is used to rank applicants for the interview stage, not simply to pass or fail you.

There is no single universal pass mark. Most locals want a stanine of 4 or higher to move you forward to an interview; some will interview candidates who score a 3, and more competitive locals effectively want a 5 or better because so many strong applicants apply. A voltage tester is first checked on a known live source to confirm it is working, then used on the target circuit, and finally checked again on the known live source. Only after all three steps agree may the circuit be treated as safe. This “live-dead-live” procedure guards against a tester that has failed silently, which could otherwise give a false all-clear on a circuit that is still energized.
