Paper-based, no calculator, no guessing penalty

Three practical rules follow from the format. You cannot use a calculator — every math item is meant to be done by hand or in your head. The test is paper-based, so you can mark up the booklet, cross out wrong options, and jot arithmetic in the margins. And there is no penalty for guessing: your score is the number of correct answers, so you should never leave a question blank. Section 1: Reading Comprehension (Cloze Format)

This is the section most prep pages describe incorrectly. EIAT reading is not the usual “read a paragraph, answer questions about it” style. According to the NEIEP study guide, it is cloze format: you read a passage that has words removed, and for each blank you choose the word that best completes the sentence from four options.

What the cloze / fill-in-the-blank format looks like

A cloze item drops a key word out of a sentence and replaces it with a blank. Your job is to read the surrounding sentence — and sometimes the sentences around it — and pick the word that fits both the grammar and the meaning. It tests vocabulary in context and whether you can follow the logic of a technical passage, which is exactly the skill an apprentice needs when reading manuals, safety procedures, and code.

The four answer options (A–D) and how to eliminate

Each blank gives you four choices, labeled A through D. Often two or three of them are the same part of speech and are all plausible at a glance — the trick is that only one fits the precise meaning. Read the whole sentence with each candidate word plugged in, and eliminate any that clash with the surrounding context, not just the grammar.

Read the entire passage once before filling any blank. A word that seems right in isolation may contradict a detail two sentences later. On a cloze test, context always beats first instinct.

Section 2: Mechanical Comprehension

The mechanical comprehension section presents pictorial questions with three answer options. You are shown a simple diagram — gears, pulleys, levers, a hydraulic cylinder — and asked which way something turns, which setup takes more force, or how a change affects speed. You do not need formulas memorized; you need to reason about how simple machines behave.

The core concepts NEIEP tests

Expect the standard mechanical-reasoning building blocks: gears (direction of rotation, speed and torque from tooth counts), pulleys and block-and-tackle (mechanical advantage, force vs. distance), levers and fulcrums, hydraulics and pneumatics, plus basic force, friction, and center of gravity. The questions use everyday and shop scenarios, so the reasoning is concrete rather than abstract.

Notice how this differs from the fixed pulley above — a pulley has to move with the load to multiply force.

The rule to remember: count the rope segments supporting the movable block — that number is the mechanical advantage.

Section 3: Arithmetic / Mathematics (No Calculator)

The math section is 30 questions of shop arithmetic, done without a calculator. Expect fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportions, order of operations, and light algebra — the kind of math an elevator mechanic uses to lay out measurements and read prints.

The five-option format and the “No answer” choice

Here is the second detail almost every competitor misses. On the EIAT math section, each item gives you five choices, and the fifth option is “e) No answer.” You select it only when none of the four numerical choices matches the result you calculated. It is a genuine answer, not a trick — but it means you cannot just pick “the closest number.” Work the problem, then check whether your exact result is actually one of the options; if it is not, “No answer” may be correct.

How the EIAT Is Scored (and Why 70% Is Only the Start)

Your EIAT score is simply the number of questions you answer correctly (no penalty for wrong answers). The 70% pass mark is the threshold to move forward — but treating it as a finish line is the mistake that keeps qualified applicants waiting.

Some prep sites state that applicants are sorted into four ranked tiers and that the ranked list stays valid for two years. You may see this repeated as fact — but it is not stated in the official NEIEP study guide, and the exact banding and list-validity rules can vary by local. What is reliable to say: passing qualifies you, your score influences your ranking, and final selection also reflects your interview and any local criteria (for example, veteran preference). Treat the specific “four tiers / two years” detail as reported-but-unverified, and confirm the current rules with your local.

What happens after you pass

A passing score usually leads to an interview with the local’s committee. Some locals also include a hands-on component that checks basic tool use and the ability to read measurements. Your standing coming out of the written test, combined with the interview, drives when you are offered an apprenticeship slot.

How Hard Is the EIAT?

No single EIAT question is exotic — the reading is vocabulary-in-context, the mechanical items are simple-machine reasoning, and the math is shop arithmetic. The difficulty comes from three things working together.

Where candidates lose points

The two most common weak spots are no-calculator math and mechanical reasoning for people who have not worked around machines. If you are rusty on fractions or you have never had to reason about a block and tackle, those sections feel harder than they should — not because the concepts are advanced, but because they are unfamiliar and fast.
