The Ramsay MAT-5 (Mechanical Aptitude Test, fifth edition) measures your ability to learn and reason about basic mechanical and physical principles — not what you already know from a specific trade. It is written at an apprentice/entry level, so employers use it to predict how quickly a candidate could pick up hands-on maintenance and production work. You do not need an engineering degree, advanced math or prior shop experience to sit it; the test is designed to gauge mechanical potential. Ramsay test format: what to expect on test day
36 questions in 20 minutes — the timing math
The MAT-5 is short but tight. Twenty minutes across 36 questions works out to about 33 seconds per question. That is comfortable for a plain word problem, but many items include a diagram of gears, pulleys or a hydraulic cylinder that you have to read before you can even start reasoning — so the diagram-heavy questions eat into your average and the clock becomes the real challenge.

Do not get stuck. If a question is not clicking within about 30 seconds, pick your best guess and move on — there is no penalty for guessing, and one hard item is not worth three easy ones you never reach.
Question style and the three answer options
Almost every MAT-5 question is multiple choice with three answer options. The wording is deliberately plain, and many stems pair a short scenario with a simple line drawing. The plainness can feel like a trap — the “obvious” answer is sometimes the distractor — so read each option before you commit. With only three choices, an educated guess still gives you a one-in-three chance, which is worth taking on anything you cannot solve in time.
Calculator, proctoring and test conditions
No calculator is allowed — the arithmetic is light by design, and you are expected to work it in your head or on scratch paper if the proctor permits. Whether you sit the MAT-5 online with remote proctoring or on-site at the employer’s facility depends entirely on the employer; both are common. Your invitation will tell you the format, whether a webcam is required, and what ID to bring.

Household objects (everyday mechanics)
These items show ordinary things — a door latch, a bottle opener, a bicycle — and ask you to reason about how they work. They reward common sense more than book knowledge, but the clock still punishes overthinking.
Production & maintenance (gears, pulleys, hydraulics, power transmission)
This is the shop-floor category: meshing gears, belt-and-pulley drives, and hydraulic systems. You will trade speed for force and back again, so the two workhorse rules are “fewer teeth spin faster” and, for hydraulics, “pressure is force divided by area, and it acts equally throughout the fluid.”

An old-fashioned hand drill has a 40-tooth crank gear that meshes with a 10-tooth pinion on the chuck. For each full turn of the crank, how many turns does the chuck make?

Answer: A. One turn of the 40-tooth crank gear pushes 40 teeth through the mesh. The pinion turns once for every 10 of its teeth that pass, so 40 ÷ 10 = 4 full turns of the chuck. A small gear driven by a large one always spins faster — that is how a hand drill turns a slow crank into a fast bit.

In a disc-brake system, the driver applies 100 pounds to the master-cylinder piston, which has an area of 1 square inch. The caliper piston has an area of 3 square inches. About how much force does the caliper piston push with?
A. 33 pounds B. 100 pounds C. 300 pounds

Answer: C. The master cylinder builds a line pressure of 100 lb ÷ 1 sq in = 100 psi, and that pressure is carried undiminished through the fluid to the caliper. The caliper piston then pushes with 100 psi × 3 sq in = 300 pounds. A bigger output piston multiplies force in exactly the ratio of the areas.
Science & physics (force, motion, levers)
These items test the physics you feel every day — gravity, inertia, friction and leverage — usually through a work scene rather than an equation. The key insight examiners probe again and again is that horizontal and vertical motion are independent of each other.

Answer: C. The sideways flick changes only the bolt’s horizontal motion; gravity pulls both bolts downward at exactly the same rate. Because horizontal and vertical motion are independent, both bolts take the same time to fall the 4 feet and land together — the flicked one just lands farther out.
Hand & power tools
This category checks that you recognise common tools, know what each is for, and can read a measurement — the kind of practical literacy a maintenance tech uses daily. Reading a tape measure to the nearest sixteenth is a classic item.

Answer: D. Each smallest division equals one sixteenth of an inch. The arrow sits eleven small divisions past the 2-inch line, so the reading is 2 inches plus 11/16 inch, or 2-11/16 inches. Counting the little marks — not eyeballing the fraction — is what keeps these items accurate.
How the Ramsay test is scored (raw score, percentile, and the “passing score” myth)

Your MAT-5 result has two parts. The raw score is simply how many of the 36 questions you answered correctly. Ramsay then converts that into a percentile rank by comparing you to a norm group of past test-takers — a 70th percentile means you scored higher than 70% of that group. Percentile is what most employers actually look at, because it shows where you stand relative to other applicants rather than as an absolute number.
There is no universal passing score — employers set the cutoff
Ramsay does not publish a single “pass mark” for the MAT-5. Each employer decides its own cutoff based on the role and how competitive the applicant pool is, so the same raw score can clear one company’s bar and fall short at another. If you see a fixed “you need X to pass” figure quoted online, treat it with caution — it is almost always an employer-specific number, not an official Ramsay standard.
The widely-quoted “46 out of 60 = 80th percentile” figure comes from Ramsay’s 60-question MecTest / MultiCraft journey-level tests — not the 36-question MAT-5. Do not use 60-question benchmarks to judge a 36-question test.
What score is competitive on the MAT-5
On a 36-question test like the MAT-5, an average raw score tends to land at roughly 25 out of 36. In practical terms, scoring near 25 is average, and getting into the high 20s puts you above most of the pack. Aiming for roughly 29 or more is a sensible competitive target that tends to land you around the top 25–30% at many employers. Treat that as a preparation goal, not a guaranteed pass — Ramsay does not publish public percentile bands, and the real cutoff is always the employer’s.
How hard is the Ramsay test?
Why candidates find it tricky
Most people are surprised by how plain the questions look — and that is exactly what trips them up. The stems are short and the wording is deliberately simple, which can make two of the three options feel equally reasonable until you slow down and reason it through. Combine that with roughly 33 seconds per question and the real difficulty becomes clear: it is a time-pressure test as much as a mechanics test. Candidates rarely fail because a concept is too advanced; they fall behind because they second-guess easy items or get stuck on one diagram.
Do you need mechanical experience or advanced math?
No. The MAT-5 is an aptitude test, not a trade exam — it measures your potential to learn mechanical work, so there is no advanced math, no formulas to memorise and no assumption of shop experience. What helps most is familiarity: knowing how gears, pulleys, levers and hydraulics behave so you can answer on instinct instead of deriving each one from scratch. Ramsay test family: MAT-5 vs MAT-4, MecTest, MultiCraft and the Amazon test
A lot of the confusion around “the Ramsay test” comes from the fact that Ramsay Corporation publishes several different tests. Here is how they fit together.
MAT-5 vs the older MAT-4
The MAT-5 is the current edition of the Mechanical Aptitude Test. The MAT-4 is the previous form it replaced; both share the same 36-question, 20-minute, entry-level design, so much of what you read about the MAT-4 still applies. Some employers may still be transitioning, but if you are invited today you should expect the MAT-5.
MecTest and MultiCraft (60-question journey-level tests)
These are different animals from the entry MAT. The MecTest is a 60-question journey-level test of mechanical maintenance knowledge — aimed at experienced technicians, not fresh applicants. The MultiCraft (MultiCrafTest) is similar but adds electrical content for multi-skilled maintenance roles. Because they have 60 questions and a very different norm group, their scoring benchmarks do not transfer to the 36-question MAT-5.
Is the Amazon maintenance test the Ramsay test?
Yes and no. Amazon’s RME and maintenance roles use Ramsay-built assessments, so in that sense the “Amazon test” is a Ramsay test. But the harder Amazon technician assessment is a journey-level knowledge test in the MecTest / MultiCraft family — not the entry-level MAT-5. If you are applying for an entry maintenance role expect the MAT-5; for a technician (Tier 1–3) role expect the tougher knowledge test.
